Resident Evil FPS Header Image

So first of all, Hi and thank you for reading my first post on the blog, big thumbs up to ya.

Now to get to business

I am a big fan of the Capcom series Resident Evil, everything from the introduction to the series on the PSone to the gameboy edition to the series that was… Well that’s a post for the future me thinks.

So, please do understand that I frequent these titles often for my zombie dispatching needs, however the latest addition to the series is first person? Not for me I don’t think.

So why the hate?

Casting my mind back to the other first person titles in this franchise, they didn’t really do so well. There were 3 in total ,before the latest addition:

  1. Resident Evil Survivor or Gun Survivor
  2. Dead Aim
  3. Survivor 2 Code:Veronica.

Two of these games had Light gun support, even though the first Survivor game only had light gun support on the pal version. Lucky me.

Between you and me it was a nightmare to set up

Once it was setup it was hard to control. Not the shooting, that was point and click/shoot. It was the movement that was messed up, moving using 3 buttons on the actual light gun.

Yeah you thought FPS games on the PSone were hard to control without twin-sticks. Survivor and Dead Aim (Dead Aim being a PS2 title) felt more like action games with an interesting shooting mechanic that didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the game, tarnishing the overall experience. In hindsight if these games had been made with tank controls and fixed camera angles it would of meshed together better with the game overall.

Now despite both titles

I’ll get to Survivor 2 in a minute

having independent stories linking them to the main games, they can both, be finished within an hour and a half – if you know where to go and what to do.

Having played these games recently, to me they feel more like an extra mode that could of been bolted on of the main games.

In regards to Survivor 2 CODE:Veronica… I think a quick look on YouTube will tell you everything you need to know about it.

Bit of a cop out I know but give it a look and you’ll see why

Looking to Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 looks to be a very tense survival horror game, if your playing with VR. There is only so much immersion gained from playing without.

VR certainly seems the right way forward for this genre and indeed Resident Evil 7. However for the people who, for whatever reason, haven’t been able to get a VR headset, they will be missing out on the greater sense of immersion that this title can provide. So what’s the alternative you ask? Playing in the dark at night.

old school scary for ya

I’ve seen a lot of gameplay of the new addition to the franchise, as I’m keeping a keen eye on this title, but I’ve not played the demo yet myself.

Twin-sick controls will be very fluid as you might expect from current generation consoles but I’m still undecided. First person certainly is a nice change of pace from the current formula however for me recently its the indie developers that have really taken FRS horror to the next level, creating a tense atmosphere and keeping it tense throughout.

It seems for every new update to either genre or technology to play the games on (VR and the like) there are always people playing catch up, so to speak.

For my money having Resident Evil 7 as VR compatible is a smart move, credit to them. I can’t help but think though if VR headsets hadn’t had the surge of interest and development over the past couple of years, would the new Resident Evil game have had as much anticipation as it currently has now?

I mean things are the way they are now and this is all speculative but I still wonder.

Thanks for sticking with me till the end of this post, I didn’t really mean for my first blog to be such a critique of a series of games I love so much but this is what I ended up with. And hey, just remember this is me just thinking out loud, everyone has there own opinion. I am in no way trying to change yours, just trying to give you something to think about is all.

Let me know what you think, feedback is always welcome and I will surely be revisiting the Resident Evil series in the future, hopefully with less critique and more praise.

Take it easy and I’ll catch you again
